Mixtape

Mixtape is a coming of age story of three friends and their last night together before they all go separate ways. The game is a walking simulator with arcade elements, very much like What Remains of Edith Finch.

Skating down the road with the light coming through the autumn leaves is a vibe.

The game is built around the mixtape concept, that there is a song that is suitable for every moment, and the main protagonist Rockford always has the right song for the right moment. The licensed soundtrack for the game is excellent, and that is what kind of carries the whole experience. I also liked the graphics, which are dreamy nostalgic 90’s vibe.

The main protagonists are quite shallow and not very interesting. I expect more for from a narrative driven game.

The story itself is very simple. Three kids looking to get booze for the last party of the summer before Rockford goes away. You keep alternating locations, and in every location there are callbacks to memories of this friend’s group. Some of the memories turn into arcade mini games, the craziest is a kissing scene where you control tongues, … yeah.

Popping off fire works while the car is racing down the beach was maybe one of the least satisfying mini game.

It’s a short nice little story that fits well into an evening, reminiscing of a time that was, or maybe never been. It speaks to every high school movie of the 90’s and by the end it’s absolutely fine.

I rate this game as OKAY.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
