Disco Elysium

This game is pretty bad. My first experience with it was walking out of the starting place, my character gets a change of heart, doesn’t want to be a police man anymore, and game over. It took a while for me to figure out, you need to take an aspirin for the hangover. Go figure.

This happened to me several times until I figured out you need to quicksave, like it was still the 1990’s. I started quick saving after every conversation, just to make sure, and then my save file got corrupted. So I learned to save in a new file every time. This is a game where you learn as you go.

The Whirling in Rags is where the main events of the game takes part.

You mostly go around talking to people, that is what the game is all about. If you say the right things you earn XP that you can turn into ability points. Then when you talk to someone you get to roll a dice on your ability. If the game wants you to be tough, and you put no points into toughness you will have 3% chance to pass the check.

This screwed me over. I looked at a wiki and it told me to quick save before the conversation and load if I failed the check. I spent an hour reloading my game. This cannot be the way it was intended to be played.

The Karaoke scene is one of the best musical performances I’ve seen in a video game.

Close to the end you need to walk past a mural with high skill in shivers. A shiver will travel across your spine as you study it, and you will sense the location of the murderer in the cold winter breeze.

How the heck should I figure that out without a wiki?

So why would you play this awful game? Because it is a work of art. Not only that it is actually stunning to look at, and looks unlike anything you’ve seen before. It completely excels in its dialogue and story telling, in a way that I have never seen before. It builds up a world, full of pain and strife, intricate with so many conflicts and nuances, I have no idea how anyone’s mind could come up with this. It is completely mind blowing.

What I also really enjoyed was how the way the dialogue options that you choose, comes back through the game and remind you of who you are and what you’ve said before. You invest in the game and you’ll get awarded. These things are so great.

Kim and .. what’s his name?

I have one regret. I never managed to convince the freight container to open itself up. I so wondered what I would find inside.

Despite all the flaws of this game, I rate it as GREAT.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
