Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

This is the sixth R&C game that I play, so I could start to call myself somewhat of a R&C connoisseur. With the previous installment, the Ratchet & Clank remake, I think Insomniac really took the series several steps forward and with Rift Apart they continue in that trend. This is a rollercoaster from start to finish, with a no-ending carousel of fun moments.

The game is absolutely stunning on PlayStation 5.

The game starts with the same old Ratchet & Clank, Dr. Nefarious turns up and suddenly the dimensions are raptured and you need to defeat not only Dr. Nefarious of your own dimension but also Emperor Nefarious of another dimension. Luckily we’re only dealing with two dimensions. I would not want to fight 11 Nefariouses.

You’ll get some help. There is also another Lombax in this dimension, a female called Rivet. She is very much like Ratchet, but also adorable. There is a robot called Kit and the rest of the new cast is also excellent.

Rivet is the best character of the series to date.

The game controls great. It rewards you for quick reflexes but it doesn’t punish you for missing a jump. In worst cases you’ll need to replay the boss fight, but that’s it.

As usual with an R&C game, there’s a lot of reuse of bosses, and the gameplay can become quite repetitive. What keeps it interesting is the imaginative weapons and the change of scenery that is very diverse, and beautiful to look at.

I rate this game as GREAT.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
