Best Game I Played 2021

This is not really a GOTY list, because it’s not about the best game released in 2021. It is a list about the best game that I played 2021. Many games that I play are a few years old, because I pick them up on a sale when they’ve become inexpensive.

I usually pick three games. This year I played 22 games so the top three represents the best of the best.

Third best game I played in 2021: Demon’s Souls Remake

Demon’s Souls Remake

It was like returning home, playing Demon’s Souls again. This remake is a beautiful testament to a great game that was almost lost to the PlayStation 3 generation. Now anyone with a PlayStation 5 can pick it up and play it and that makes me happy.

Bluepoint left the rough edges to avoid conflict with the die hard fans. I have no idea why anyone would like to have the original man-eater experience, and that might be my only critique of this otherwise perfect execution.

Second best game I played in 2021: Blasphemous

Blasphemous

It was so refreshing to play a metroidvania that didn’t make a point of being hard. It is just meant to be a nice ride in a weird and intricate universe. It’s an orgie in Catholicism and that makes it unique.

Best game I played in 2021: Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Returning to Mass Effect was about time and this remake was made with much love and dedication. It made the replay both effortless and enjoyable by removing the rough edges and streamlining the experience. It becomes evident what a masterpiece this series was, and I think that is worth celebrating.

Everyone should have played the Mass Effect trilogy.
