2020 in review

Before diving right into my best games I played 2020 list, I want to reflect a bit on the games I played this year.

I have finished 18 games this year, compared to 31 games in 2019. Despite of working from home due to the pandemic I’ve played much less than I use to. I think it has to do with me taking on a side project that is not gaming related. It has consumed a lot of time for me.

My average score this year has been 3.4 compared to 3.2 the previous year. I am getting better at picking out games that I think I will enjoy and that is mostly thanks to my backlog.

2020 Backlog

This year is the first time I’ve gotten myself a real backlog. A backlog in a spreadsheet where I put all my games I intend to play and sort them by my expectations. This has helped me a lot. I have better control of what game is coming up next and that sometimes motivates me in finishing the one I’m currently working on. It also helps me to remember all the games I’ve bought, because it means at some point I thought the game worth playing.

I use HowLongToBeat to calculate my pace, how much I play and I can predict when I expect to finish the game I’m playing and start playing the next game.

Expectations for 2021I have decided that I’m done with PS4. I will play the games that I’ve bought for the generation but I will not invest in more games. I will keep buying games for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 when I get hold of one.My backlog of games is estimated to keep me occupied for 2 years ahead, so that is hardly a problem. I will keep working on that backlog, adding games and ticking them off as I feel that the time it takes is well invested.I’m looking forward to playing the new Elite Dangerous expansion that is supposed to be released in March. I will play Demon’s Souls remaster as soon as I get a PS5 and I’m also looking forward to Silksong, the next Hollow Knight game. I just hope that it will not be like the Shovel Knight expansions. I never did click with those.Looking at the list of games I’ve played this year there is not a single VR game. I still want to play Beat Saber at some point, as I believe that I would really enjoy it, but apart from that it feels like Sony killed VR with PlayStation 5 unless they plan to release a new headset in the near future. There are a lot of VR titles on the PlayStation Store, but the only big title released this year is Star Wars: Squadrons. I might put that game on my backlog. It has gotten quite nice reviews. Most of all I’m looking forward to diving back into The Witcher 3 for the DLC content. I’m going to play Blasphemous, Mutant Year Zero and I will get back to Dragon’s Dogma for another try.

Until then, Happy New Year!
