Ratings

The ratings on this site doesn’t follow the ordinary conventions of game ratings. That is because I find most of them lacking.

Ten Point System

The problem with the 10 point system is that 1-6 are bad and only 7-10 matters.

Rating: 7 out of 10.

If a game has rating 3 or rating 5 doesn’t matter because it’s bad anyways.

My second criticism of this system is that 10 is mostly unobtainable. It is almost impossible to give a game 10/10, but not as unlikely to give it 5/5.

Average of all Aspects

Another type of rating system is where you rate each individual aspect of a game and then take the average.

  • Graphics: 8
  • Sound: 7
  • Music: 3
  • Game Play: 6

These always fail to include the fun part. Where is the fun in rating the sound effects of a game? A game can only be rated by its complete experience, not by breaking it down to its individual parts.

Using averages will also cause reviews to land between 7-8 even if the experience itself was best in class. This is a really bad system.

Percentage

I’ve never understood why anyone would rate in percentage.

Score: 87%

Percent of what? What’s really going on here is a scale of 1-100 which is ludicrous. I mean how do you differentiate a game that is 87% from a game that is 88%?

My Rating System

Now I’m going to present you to my perfect rating system. First of all.

  1. All my game ratings are subjective. They are not even trying to objectively rate any game. If I didn’t have fun, it is for me a bad game.
  2. If I couldn’t finish the game because it was too bad or too hard, it will affect my rating of the game.

My scale is a 1-5 scale, but I prefer to not rate in numbers because you can’t do averages or any computational analysis of my ratings. Instead my scale looks like this

  1. BAD
  2. OKAY
  3. GOOD
  4. GREAT
  5. EXCELLENT

It doesn’t mean that GREAT is twice as good as OK because 2 x 2 = 4. You can’t quantify opinions, sorry.

BAD

I didn’t enjoy it.

OKAY

I somewhat enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else.

GOOD

This was a fun experience.

GREAT

It was not only fun to play, it reached out and affected me.

EXCELLENT

I think everyone should play this game to experience what I just did.

Not so hard right? And if you don’t like what rating I’ve put on a game, you are 100% entitled to your own opinion of it.
