Neva

This game is from the same studio that made Gris, a game that I loved when it came out. It is quite apparent as it has the same beautiful dreamlike art style.

Neva is a platformer where you play as an unnamed protagonist and her dog-deer Neva. The world has been taken over by shadow creatures and your job is to rid it of them.

The art style is very beautiful and atmospheric. Sometimes it is too beautiful where form is prioritized over function. It can be hard to see what is going on, where to go or what object can be interacted with.

Actually the game remind me a lot of Sudio Gibli’s Princess Mononoke. It’s like they’ve tried to get a license for making that game but failed, and then released the game anyway. It has a lot of platforming, some fighting that can become a bit technical but never too hard. It has some mild puzzle solving but nothing challenging.

I like the art design, the sound scape and the whole vibe of this game. It’s very pleasant and relaxing to play. Sometimes the art comes in the way of usability and it becomes hard to tell which objects in the scenery you can interact with. This happened to me a couple of times.

The fighting is quite good and enjoyable. Some fights need a couple of tries before they land, but I never got stuck anywhere. If you fail you always get to retry just before the encounter, and even if some fights become technical they’re never unfair.

I really liked the game though. After I finished it I bought the DLC and played that as well. It was mostly more of the same thing. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. More of the same thing is probably what you’re after if you buy the DLC.

I rate this game as GREAT.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
