I seem to be playing one Giant Squid game for each console generation. I played Journey on PS3, Abzû on PS4 and now Sword of the Sea on PS5.
The game is a bit hard to explain, but you have this sword, that works like a snowboard and you surf around deserts turning them back into water landscapes, or the sea I guess.

You befriend sea animals, you find a villain who was responsible for drying out the sea and you do what you usually do with villains in video games.
The game is mostly focused around the surf mechanic, and it does feel very good surfing around on the sand and the water. The game is very beautiful which is great as it’s mostly about exploration. It is also not very long, which I appreciate.

Sometimes it feels like the game doesn’t really know what it wants to be. I think the original idea is that you should get into a flow state and swoosh through the levels pretty quickly just taking in the atmosphere.
Then they have added coins and collectibles and this makes you stop. It halts that flow state as you try to collect all the coins on a level. And then there is this weird vendor that lets you swap in your coins for stylish tricks on the board? And on top of that they added special rooms where you shall make as many tricks as possible within a time frame.
However the game is fine. It is fun to surf around, it is not too long and it’s very beautiful. I rate this game as GOOD
