Astro Bot

This game was highly anticipated by me in 2024, so I ordered it with the limited edition controller on day 1 .. for my son’s birthday which isn’t until december, so I just played it now. Funny preorder a game and wait 3 months to play it.

I did play Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PSVR1 which was one of the best games on that platform, so it was no surprise to me that Team Asobi managed to turn Astro’s Playroom into a fully fledged game.

Because that is what this is. Take Astro’s Playroom, which was a free demo game for PS5, and make it 10x bigger and you have Astro Bot. It’s still a love letter to all things PlayStation and it cameos a whole bunch of other PlayStation exclusives. It’s not done in a sneaky product placement thing either, it’s the whole premise.

The game looks great, is quite hard, but has super tight controls.

It does lend itself to the experience. Even if I never played Ape Escape, I enjoyed that level, and I got all giddy at the Locoroco level and Horizon Zero Dawn, which reminds me that maybe I should play the HZD lego game.

This is a super fun game. It’s like a Mario game, but I dare to say it’s better. Team Asobi has approached this with ”how can we make it more fun” in every aspect and every little detail. It’ll never give you the same puzzle twice. It’ll never give you a return boss. Every level has its own unique surprising concept, and it keeps it fresh all the way through.

Astro Bot is full of references to other games. Here’s to Elizabeth Sobek.

It’s fun but it’s not an easy game. Some of the platforming sections can be quite nasty if you’re a 10 year old and not quite experienced in 3D platforming. But the game is excellent at telling the player what to do. There is never any question of ”am I doing this right”. The levels are super clear and the bosses have tells you can spot a mile away. So my son finished the game all on his own, even though he never finishes games, and even though it was hard.

There is nothing to complain about. This really is the perfect platformer. I rate this game as EXCELLENT.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
