This is not really a GOTY list, because it’s not about the best game released in 2024. It is a list of the best games I played in 2024. Many games that I play are a few years old, because I pick them up on a sale when they become inexpensive, but that makes them just as good if not better.
Here are my three picks from the 13 games that I played 2024.
Third best game I played in 2024: Dredge
Few things pulls me in like a fishing game. I guess with today’s standards it’s akin to opening loot boxes, but it’s something about driving around in your small fishing boat, pulling up mutated tuna. The Lovecraftian elements, the creepy music and the quaint acquaintances, gets this a solid third place. I even played the first DLC and got the platinum trophy. Might return to it later for the second DLC.
Second best game I played in 2024: Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
It’s said that Elden Ring was supposed to be two games, but after finishing the first one the development team was all spent. The rest of the assets they’d produced for the second game went into this DLC. That explains the vastness. Have you ever heard of a 40 hour DLC before? I really enjoyed where FROMSOFTWARE took this DLC, even if some of the areas felt a bit unpopulated and the last boss was too hard, I truly enjoyed and took my time with it.
Best game I played in 2024: Baldur’s Gate 3
I spent over 100 hours in this game and it’s rare for me wanting to restart such a long game, just after I finished it. I’m already planning my replay and have bought the necessary addons to make the next experience a fresh one. This is a masterpiece and there is really no contender. It is the best game I’ve played the last couple of years. I need to update my “best games of all time”-list.
