Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Yay! A new Super Mario Bros. game! WONDERFUL!

Actually I do prefer these 2D Super Mario Games over the 3D games. The formula fits better for the 2D games, even if the 3D games also are quite fun. The last one I played I think would be New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Wonder is an evolution of that game. It is the original Super Mario World, with updated graphics, some new enemies and new levels.

It’s a standard Super Mario World type game with a few new additions, like playing as Elephant Mario.

There are a few things that stands out for me. This game is much easier compared to the previous game I played. Not just the levels are easier, there is no longer a timer on each level, but they’ve also made the whole game more accessible. Every level has a difficulty rating, so you know what you’re getting into. You don’t have to do all the super hard levels. You can stick with the easier ones and make it all the way to the end. The game has a shop where you can spend your coin and buy extra lives, and they are dirt cheap. There is no risk of running out of lives in this game, even in the later harder levels.

Another thing standing out to me is the playfulness of this game. On each level you can collect a Wonder Seed and this makes the whole level become a playfield of imagination. You never really know what is going to happen as the experience is different each time. Here I think Nintendo has taken inspiration of Little Big Planet, as Wonder doesn’t even keep to its own Mario formula once you taken a Wonder Seed. Sometimes it becomes a racing game, and other times a rhythm game. It’s unexpected and I applaud them for it.

When you collect a Wonder Seed, anything could happen. Like a stampede of bulls rushing down the end of the level. Where do we do from here?

You have the standard progression of worlds: flower, mushroom, ice, desert, swamp and lava. Each world has a boss at the end of it, but it is always the same boss. You get to fight Bowser Jr. six times and the fights are not very different. The last boss of the game was fun however, but maybe a bit easy as I did finish it on my first try.

I rate this game as GREAT.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
