Call of the Sea

This is a puzzle walking simulator driven by a strong narrative. You play as Norah, arriving on a mysterious island in the pacific where her husband has disappeared during an expedition. It is up to you to uncover what happened to the expedition and discover the secrets of the island. The story has strong H.P. Lovecraft vibes early on, which really compels me.

The graphics are nice. Not flexing the PS5 performance by any means, but they serve the purpose of the game.

The story is a bit slow. It focuses a lot around the relationships between the members of the expedition, because the overall story is pretty short. It does this thing like many walking sims – it makes you walk very slow to lengthen the game, but if you do that, you need to have a story that rewards you often, to make up for the trudge. I don’t think this game rewards the player enough for the slow walking pace and it gets really irritating around puzzles that require you to walk between the different parts of the puzzle.

The puzzles are mostly pattern matching symbols. Some of them are quite advanced but sometimes it’s just pushing buttons in the correct order.

The puzzles are not my kind of puzzles. Many of them were quite simple but the harder ones I looked up immediately because I’m not here for that.

If you want a slow cooker that is gradually revealing a Lovecraftian story, this game is for you.

I rate this game as GOOD.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
