XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

This is my third replay of XCOM 2 and my second of War of the Chosen. There is something pulling me back to this game time and time again.

It must be because the tactical gameplay is excellent. It is complex, which makes it interesting and rewarding, but not too complex. I feel like I can control the battlefield, something a less crafted tactical shooter wouldn’t enable you to.

But this is also the most buggy game I have ever played. I tried to play Iron Man three times around but failed due to bugs. At one time the game dropped me off at the end of the mission surrounded by all enemies. on that map. It was an instant wipeout. My last try on Iron Man my save file got corrupted and disappeared from the save game list.

So I had to play it on normal but it was still a mess of bugs. It is also a very hard game so I doubt that I would’ve been able to finish it in Iron Man.

The resistance fighters with their special abilities is a nice addition to the base game. The reapers ability to scout ahead without being seen is almost too powerful.

About the difficulty I think the game has a way too steep difficulty curve. It introduces new enemies way too quickly making the game really hard early on, even if you focus on science output. Later in the game, it runs out of enemies and you have to fight the same over and over for the last third of the game. If it had paced the progression better it would’ve made the game more interesting all the way through.

I think the last level is quite disappointing as it gives you the same enemies that you’ve already fought before, just in a higher quantity.

Yes, this game has a lot of defects, but I don’t doubt I will be coming back to it many times again, as the core mechanic still rocks.

I rate this game as GOOD.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
