Blasphemous 2

This game presents a world that goes 110% into its own thing. Where other games represent a variation or subset of something else, Blasphemous goes hard into its own lore with its fundamentalistic Catholicism if you let it mutate for 100 years into an unrecognisable cult.

It is fascinating, strange and at times terrifying. But I do love it.

The art direction of Blasphemous 2 is superb. Every screen is breathtaking and the reward of seeing the next thing is what drives me through the game. There is nothing that looks like it, not even Blasphemous 1.

You no longer have Mea Culpa from Blasphemous 1, but instead you have three weapons to choose from where one is a huge incense burner that you use like a flail.

The gameplay is very much like the first game but the bosses and enemies in this game is better designed. I find more enjoyment in playing this game, working my way through the levels and revisit them to unlock all the secrets.

This game leans toward platforming puzzles and there are a lot of gauntlets where you get locked in while the game throw waves of enemies at you. These elements get a bit tedious after a while, but its a way to stop you from just speed running the levels without killing the enemies.

I enjoy the story even if I understand little of it, but it treats you with cut scenes which are just breathtaking. The characters are interesting even if they sometimes are gross and weird.

Even a simple NPC like the town vendor is designed to sparkle your imagination.

I was quite enjoying the game. It has some repetition which drags down the rating and the controls are not as tight as Hollow Knight, but I did have fun going around unlocking all the secrets. Then I reached the last level where they cranked up the difficulty to 11, and after much toil I reached the second to last boss which was just painful. After 20 tries I don’t think I’m capable of beating it and I’m certainly not having fun anymore. I’m quitting, knowing that I’ve finished 98% of the game.

This was a really bad experience at the end, and it drags down the rating of a game that could have been great.

I rate this game as GOOD.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
