Tchia

This game caught my eye on PlayStation Plus. It made me associate with the Disney movie Moana (Vaiana?), and as the devs say, it’s a love letter to New Caledonia. I believe that it should be taken for what it is. If you’re looking for an action adventure game you will be sorely disappointed.

The main protagonist Tchia is very sympathetic.

The game starts off on a small island where Tchia has been brought up by her father. One day The Bad Man™️ turns up and abducts her father of unclear reasons. Tchia is taken in by an old man named Tre, but it turns out she cannot stay there, but must set out to find and save her father.

The story is not great. It’s way too generic and full of fillers that doesn’t provide any value. The characters are alright and the dialogue is okay. The script can be both really boring, and then sometimes it does something completely unexpected which makes you laugh out loud.

The ukulele mini games were not a favorite.

The gameplay is okay for a walking simulator/adventure game, but as soon as it turns into action it’s not good enough. This is a result of the game trying to be more than it’s capable of.

Here is the problem. Tchia is clearly done by a small team of very dedicated people, and they wanted to do so much with this game, that none of it turned out very well. The open world is empty. The city looks like a PS2 game. The action feels like an afterthought. If they had narrowed down the scope, created a linear experience without action elements,  I’m sure the game would have turned out much better. Clearly the talent and dedication is there but feels like Bilbo so adequately put it – too little butter scraped over too much bread.

I rate this game as OKAY.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
