The Quarry

This game is like everyone of those teen horror movies of the 90’s where young people get stuck in the country side with some undefined evil killing them off one by one. This is also a perfect sequel to Until Dawn and even if it is separated both thematically and story wise.

The game starts out at the end of summer camp at Hackett’s Quarry, the kids go home and the counsellors gets left behind as their mini van won’t start. They are just going to stay for one more night, which to the camp’s boss Mr. H. seems like a terrible idea before he rushes off to get help (or get away). Needless to say, this last night hold all kinds of horrors for our cast.

This game looks very good, especially the characters. They are super well rendered.

The story is like a fulfilment of all the teenage horror tropes there are. It is quite unsurprising, which also makes it feel quite safe from a horror perspective. Sure the game is creepy and gory, but it doesn’t take you places where you don’t want to go. It is unpleasant in a pleasant kind of way.

The script and the dialogue in this game is fenomenal. Both the writing and the delivery by the actors. It’s very fun and it lighten the mood of this otherwise quite gruesome tale. You can always trust Dylan to drop a funny line to release tension when it’s at its worse.

There is something to say about the graphics, because the rendition of the characters and their faces is so good that you jump in your chair first time you see it. It is Detroit: Become Human kind of good. The game also does a good job with the environments and the lightning. They play with both light and shadow in a way that enhances the story telling.

The game is creepy. What lightens the mood is the dialogue between the characters which is always funny.

If I’m going to say some bad things, the camera angles are sometimes quite annoying and it makes it hard to control the characters. They walk super slow which is irritating when you are in a stressful situation. Thankfully they do not make you do tricky manouvers with these controls like other games do (Looking at you Plague Tale Innocence!). The game is very dark, which makes it hard to play on a sunny day. You simply cannot see shit on your TV or monitor.

The game mechanics is very very forgiving. There are QTEs (quick time events) but they are so forgiving that you could ask your grandmother to play it. They are not there to test your reaction ability but to make you choose path, and give you limited time to do so. Sometimes it feels like this is more of a movie than a game, but sadly I do not think that the story holds up to the more demanding walking simulator standards nor the quality that I expect from a visual novel.

I rate this game as GREAT.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
