Mass Effect

Despite the name of this blog, I rarely replay games, but this time I made an exception. I bought the Mass Effect Legendary Edition and replayed Mass Effect on PlayStation 5. The Legendary Edition is a recent remake of all three games in the trilogy. I’m not sure I will manage to complete all three, so I’ll review them one at a time.

Mass Effect is the first game in the space opera trilogy. In this game we get introduced to Commander Shepherd and her crew as they learn about the imminent threat to the galaxy, the Reapers – a sentient AI race, million of years old that wipe out all life forms every 50 000 years.

Let’s do some reaping.

Yeah. That story is awesome.

The game itself shows its age. The characters are stiff as puppets, the environments are lacking details and there’s a lot of repetition. Most of the action takes place in corridors where you shoot your way through.

Compared to the other games in the series this one is very linear. There is a beaten path for you to follow, and the many side missions are mostly “go fetch”. However, I do enjoy the setting, the characters and the villain. The gameplay is meh, and the bosses are the weak part of this game.

The remake looks really crisp even on a 4K TV.

The remake of the game is great. Everything looks crisp and performs as you would expect on a modern PlayStation 5 console. The few convenience additions are very much welcomed, like the ability to skip elevators.

This game was awesome when it was released in 2007 and it is incredible how well it holds up, but I’m playing it mostly for nostalgia and I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed it as much if it was my first time.

I rate this game as GOOD.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
