Angry Birds Reloaded

I’m not a real gamer. A real gamer doesn’t play through all 315 levels of Angry Birds Reloaded. That is some casual gaming shit. I’ve never played Fortnite, Overwatch, Call of Duty multiplayer, DOTA, Battlefield, PUBG, Apex Legends or Destiny. I haven’t even played GTA5 Online.

But I did finish and review 18 games last year and I plan to review even more this year.

Angry Birds Reloaded is a remaster of the first Angry Birds released to phones in the beginning of time. I’m not sure what they’ve remastered, but it looks and feels good on my iPhone XS and I guess that is the thing. The old Angry Birds would probably have looked like crap.

It’s the same old Angry Birds as before.

But what the real deal is that old Angry Birds were the beginning of the “free but with ads” era of mobile gaming, and this is completely free from ads and paid for by your Apple Arcade membership. That is nice.

The game is okay. They have not done anything to the concept. You hurl the same birds as you’ve always done. Sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss and there is more luck to it than skill. One or two levels I found so hard that I had to use one of the super birds to clear it, but most of the levels are manageable with the basic set of birds. It is kind of obvious that the game is prepared for in-app purchase of bird coins you can use to unlock more super birds, but in Apple Arcade you cannot buy bird coins for money. I guess it’s because Apple doesn’t want in-app purchases in their Apple Arcade. If you have a subscription that should be all that you need.

Prepared for monetisation, but probably not allowed on the Apple Arcade.

Did I have fun? Nah, but I did fill some time that I would otherwise be browsing Twitter. So I guess that it’s at least better than that.

I rate this game as OKAY.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
