Astro Bot Rescue Mission

When I first saw this announced with the weird PlayStation mascot my reaction was “meh‚” because everything made with that mascot so far has been a bland demo of PlayStation 4 or VR. I was not expecting anything else than a crude tech demo, but then the reviews start coming in and I decided to give it a go. I’m not sorry I did, this game is marvelous.

It is quite easy to describe. You have the game play of LittleBigPlanet where you run a level from start to finish and try to avoid hazards in the environment, and the concept of Rayman Legends where you shall collect hidden buddies in the level. This works really well in the setting.

The game is really cute, the graphics are astonishing consider it is VR, the music is very good and the levels are really diverse. You keep playing with new mechanics, tools, environments, hazards right up until the end. This makes the game never to become boring the way LittleBigPlanet tends to get.

The VR in this is pretty neat. Your camera go from one point and forward on rails until the end, but the character can go all around. This gives you an anchor point while you’re still free to move around. What I miss about this is the ability to go back, because sometimes I do not discover things until I’ve moved past them.

This is a 360 view game. You will find stuff behind you, you will look up and down alot. You will reach forward and peek past edges. This is where the game really shines. No matter how I am turned or where I’m looking the controls keep being intuitive. I’m looking behind me and up, and still the little character goes in just the direction that I was anticipating without even thinking about it. A lot of work must have gone into this – I never had any problems with the controls and every death is on me.

This game optimize on fun. Everything is made to be fun and I think it succeeds. Even the bosses are really fun and while they seem challenging I do not really have any problems putting them down. There is an optional playground and challenge maps to make the game longer, but I went straight for the credits, which turns out also have its own mini game. Because it must be fun, right?

Yeah, I must say I adore this game. It is one of the best games I’ve played this year. I was entertained all the way through and I was always looking forward to another sitting where I could play some more.

(also, the water effects in this game is aaaawesome!)

I rate this game as EXCELLENT.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
