2018 in Review

Before diving right into my game of the year list for 2018 I wanted to reflect a bit about the games I’ve played this year.

The statistics

This year I’ve played 32 games and I’ve finished 28 of them. The average score I’ve given during the year is 2.8, which means that most of the games I’ve played this year has been ok/good.

Since 2017

In comparison I played 43 games in 2017 with an average score of 3.1. I’ve played fewer games this year because I’ve focused more on work during evenings when I usually play. I also got stuck with Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun for several months, because it was longer than I anticipated and not as fun.

Handheld is the summer of 2018

During the summer I bought a Nintendo Switch that rapidly has become my favored console. I still play games on my PS4, but it feels so much easier to just pick up the Switch and play a game. I can play even when the TV is occupied by another family member.

Games I’ve played on the Switch this year are Super Mario OdysseyOwlboyOld Man’s JourneyDead CellsJydgeInto the Breach and Gris. I have started playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild but I will not finish that during 2018.

I’ve kept playing VR games and I still like the medium. I’ve strapped on the headset for Eve: ValkyrieArizona SunshineDéraciné and The Inpatient. There are some VR experiences that I’ve saved for 2019 that I’m really looking forward to Apex Construct, Tetris Effect, Moss and Astro Bot Rescue Mission.

Expectations for 2019

There are still games from 2018 in my backlog that I’m looking forward to playing in 2019. Hollow Knight is supposed to be awesome and I will also start playing Celeste soonish. I will replay a few games on Switch, Civilization 6 and Dark Souls Remastered, while I also will invest in New Super Mario Bros U when it is released.

The big anticipated game of 2019 will be Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice by From Software that is out 22 march. This will probably keep me entertained for several months as I hunt down the platinum trophy as I always do with From Software games.

I don’t believe that there will be a PlayStation 5 in 2019, but I do hope that Sony release some news on a PSVita replacement. That would be awesome. I also hope that VR will become a more integrated part of PlayStation 5 and let’s hope they ditch the archaic BlueRay disc for physical copies. It feels very outdated to put a disc into my console.

That’s all for now. I’ll return with a Game of the Year list at the start of next year. Until then, happy new year!
